PHP way to check if URL exists

There are two scripts both of them are good to check if the URL exists or not.

Solution #1 using get_headers

function url_exists($url){
$file_headers = @get_headers($file);
if($file_headers[0] == 'HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found') 
  return false;
else return true;
}

Solution #2 using CURL

function url_exists($url) {
    if (!$fp = curl_init($url)) return false;
    return true;
}
